Check out our inspirational overview of Zanzibar with ideas of what you can get up to on a tropical getaway here…
Zanzibar is a beautiful Tanzanian archipelago set in the Indian Ocean; it’s considered as one of the most wonderful travel destinations in Africa, comprising of three major islands and a series of small islands. There is so much to admire, enjoy and experience here and we recommend that you put Zanzibar high up on your travel wishlist, with reasons to fall in love below.
Relax on Picture-Perfect Beaches
Zanzibar is best known for its pristine beaches that line its endless stretch of Indian Ocean coastline. The beaches of Zanzibar’s southeast coast are particularly idyllic with soft white sands, crystal clear turquoise waters, lush coconut palms and traditional dhow sail boats - something you’d see on a postcard. Jambiani Beach in this region is frequently considered as one of the world’s most blissful beaches! Along the northwest coast of Zanzibar are happening beach spots including Nungwi Beach North which is filled with attractions, entertainment and diving opportunities plus breath-taking sunsets.
Immerse Yourself in Culture
It’s not all beaches and natural landscapes here. Zanzibar is a relatively undeveloped destination away from mainland Tanzania, so it’s very authentic in terms of culture. The region was an important destination for the historic trade routes which has therefore lead to a melting pot of cultural influences from Africa, Europe, India and the Middle East with lots of interesting traditions and customs. Visit Zanzibar’s excellent museums and galleries for more of a cultural insight, including the Peace Memorial Museum.
Step Back in Time
Zanzibar has a very long and rich history; it was formerly the largest slave market in East Africa, a base for traders and an important hub for the ivory trade. Visit the oldest area of Zanzibar: Stone Town, an official UNESCO World Heritage Centre in Zanzibar City which is home to well-preserved ancient buildings including mosques, houses, mansions and palaces, allowing a glimpse into Zanzibar’s bygone era. You can also take a ride on a traditional wooden dhow, which was used daily here for transport during the trade eras.
Exotic Spices & Cuisines
Zanzibar’s diverse cultures are really reflected in its cuisine; the food here is absolutely delicious, with all sorts of exotic ingredients and flavours. Seafood is a staple cuisine of Zanzibar including fresh lobster, and other popular dishes include the Zanzibar pizza (crispy pancakes filled with meats or veg), Swahili curry and urojo soup. Spice is an important part of Zanzibar’s history which you can go and explore for yourself on a spice tour at plantations; enjoy the scent and taste of local spices such as cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and cardamom.
Colourful Festivals
The locals of Zanzibar know how to throw a good party! Major Zanzibar events include the Sauti za Busara, an African music festival which takes place around February each year and the four day Mwaka Kogwa festival which celebrates the Shirazi New Year and is celebrated all across the island, bringing cultural communities together. Another highlight event is the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) which usually takes place in June and July, showcasing performing arts, cinema, music performances, workshops and screenings.
Best Time to Visit
Zanzibar has a pleasant climate pretty much all year round, with hot temperatures and sunshine possible at all times. However, a favourable time to jet set off to this tropical archipelago is between June-October which promises sunny and mild spring weather and hardly any rain; this means perfect beach conditions. During November and December there is a chance of rainfall and March-May sees the most rain.
