In south Mexico lies the spacious coastal resort of Cancun, established on the Yucatan Peninsula in 1974 as a tourist town. It has excellent amenities for visitors including world-class accommodation, restaurants and bars. There are also entertaining music and cultural festivals held throughout the year. Cancun is famous for being a tropical paradise with around 150 miles (241 kilometres) of white sandy beaches. The resort has a variety of watersports and outdoor adventures such as pony trekking in the surrounding rainforests. Cancun is also near to ancient Mayan ruins dating back to 300 AD.
Mexico City is one of the largest urban developments in the world. It has a thriving, modern culture of international restaurants, theatres and street performers. The Angel of Independence statue overlooks the Paseo de la Reforma, the main shopping boulevard and home to many exclusive boutiques and designer brands. Mexico City also has several UNESCO World Heritage sites including the floating Lake Gardens of Xochimilco. The historic Old Town is very picturesque, with Spanish colonial architecture dating back to 1650. There are many important Aztec sites such as Templo Mayor in the centre of the city.

Cancun is ideal for outdoor activities. Scuba diving and snorkelling enthusiasts love to explore the local Mesoamerican Barrier Reef where there are corals, tropical fish and turtles. The Underwater Museum features submerged sculptures which are slowly being colonised by fish and other sea creatures. Near Cancun are many cenotes, underwater collapsed caves that form idyllic pools. Cenote Siete Bocas at Puerto Morales is only one hour away. Take a thirty-minute drive to the ruins of Ancient Mayan culture at El Meco. The ruins of a Mayan temple can also be seen on the Isla Mujeres, near the Cancun coast.
One of the most impressive Aztec sites to visit is Teotihuacan, where many temples survived the Spanish Conquest. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the city's most beautiful cathedrals. Its most revered relic is a woven image of Mary which miraculously appeared on a cloak in 1531. There is also a museum devoted to the colourful paintings of Mexican life by the artist Frida Kahlo. Popular ways of exploring Mexico City include boat cruises on the river and bicycle tours of the city. Outdoor activities include hiking, pony trekking, and visiting the Cacahuamilpa Caves in the nearby National Park.
