A local businesswoman from Hounslow, Mrs Veena Nangla, won the prestigious Asian Business Woman of the Year award at the recent Asian Business Awards held at the Westminster Park Plaza in April 2014.

The support and dedication they have all provided over many years has helped lead to our success. I think it is important to recognise women in business as young women need role models and I hope that the small amount I have achieved will inspire girls and women to come forward and follow their dreams too.”
A BA (Hons) graduate in English, Veena immigrated to the UK from India in 1966 (a memorable year for her and for England!).
She started her career started as an accounts clerk for Walls Ice Cream but as she’s not a big fan of ice-cream, the travel industry was her next move where she joined Rankin Kuhn Travel Agency in Oxford Street.
She learnt many tricks of the trade in her years there and her entrepreneurial drive led her to start up her own travel venture with her equally entrepreneurial husband in 1986. They started their business with three staff and a single typewriter. Veena was responsible for writing out paper tickets and compiling manifestos for airlines informing them how many passengers would be flying on their planes!
To date, in her 28 years of running Brightsun Travel, her job has spanned sales reservations, HR, marketing and accounts. With her sharp eye for detail, her role in controlling sales, and later finance, she has contributed to significant growth in the company. From their first year’s turnover of £500k, she has helped Brightsun Travel to grow to a turnover today of £95 million, employing 170 staff.
